The Correlation Between H. Pylori Infection with Serum Ferritin Concentration and Iron Deficiency Anemia
نویسنده
چکیده
Iron deficiency is the most common cause of anemia worldwide, however a significant number of these patients remain undiagnosed. Based on the high frequency of iron deficiency anemia and H. pylori infection in Iran, we have evaluated their correlation in this study. 184 patients mostly with GI system complaints were referred for determination of serum anti H. pylori IgG and IgA levels. In addition, we performed complete cell blood count and serum ferritin concentration tests for all the patients. Statistical analysis was performed on the results in order to determine possible correlations. Our results showed that in 77.8% of our patients at least one of serum anti H. pylori IgG or IgA antibodies was positive. The rate of positive serology was increased in higher age groups. Patients’ gender did not influence the results. Serum ferritin level did not show any correlation with H. pylori infection and the frequency of iron deficiency anemia was not higher in infected individuals. Although many studies have shown positive correlation between H. pylori infection and iron deficiency anemia, however few studies have not confirmed these findings. Our study does not support this correlation, as well. Due to high frequency of both iron deficiency anemia and H. pylori infection in Iran, further large scale studies are recommended.

Serum levels of iron parameters and IL-17 in children with Helicobacter pylori infection compared to healthy group
Helicobacter pylori is related to iron deficiency anemia (IDA) and inflammatory responses causing gastric and duodenal ulcer and carcinoma. Moreover, it leads to deficiency of factors associated with iron adsorption and transfer. In the present study, we recruited 100 children (50 infected with H. pylori and 50 controls) aged 3-14 years old (40% male and 60% female) to evaluate the effect of H....
متن کاملEvaluation of Iron deficiency anemia and BMI in children suffering from Helicobacter pylori infection
Background Recent studies suggest an association between H. pylori infection and disorders such as iron deficiency anemia and growth delay. Considering the high prevalence of H. pylori infection and iron deficiency anemia, this study was performed in order to evaluate their relevance in children undergoing an upper endoscopy. Materials and Methods In this case-control study, children aged 2...

BACKGROUND & AIMS Helicobacter pylori infection was recently associated with iron-deficiency anemia. The aim of this study was to examine the relationship between H. pylori infection, hemoglobin, and iron status using serum ferritin as a marker for total body iron. METHODS Serum ferritin, hemoglobin, and immunoglobulin G (IgG) antibodies against H. pylori were assessed in 2794 Danish adults w...
متن کاملRefractory iron deficiency anemia and Helicobacter Pylori Infection in pediatrics: A review
Background Since the discovery of Helicobacter pylori, several clinical reports have demonstrated that H. Pylori infection has emerged as a new cause of refractory iron stores in children. We carried out a systematic literature review to primarily evaluate the existing evidence on the association between childhood H. Pylori infection and iron deficiency anemia (IDA) and secondly, to investigat...
متن کاملHigh prevalence of Helicobacter pylori in the Alaska native population and association with low serum ferritin levels in young adults.
Iron deficiency anemia is a common public health problem in the Alaska Native population. Yet, a clear etiology has eluded researchers for decades. Previous studies suggested a link between Helicobacter pylori infection, gastrointestinal blood loss due to hemorrhagic gastritis, and generalized iron deficiency anemia in adult Alaska Natives. Therefore, we examined the association between the pre...
